My favorite comic book titles that's not from the big 2(Marvel & DC)
I've been a lover comic books since I was a young kid. I enjoyed the fantastic world comics can bring to the imagination with beautiful art and engaging writing. I still collect comics till this day, and after growing tired of Marvel & DC titles I was more enthralled with indie comics, and their boundaries that stretch beyond the borders of the mainstream. Over the years I recently came across 4 interesting titles that influenced me as a writer and visual storyteller. The first comic is DEATHMATCH. The concept of Deathmatch is a gritty yet compelling story about imprisoned superheros and super villains fighting to the death until there is one victor. This comic is filled with complex characters that display a similarity to characters from the big 2. I appreciate the risks the creators took with this comic which is what drew me to this fantastic story. The second comic is one of my all time favorite comic books MADMAN. Created by Mike Allard Madman's character name is Frank Einstein who was resurrected after a fatal car accident, then stitched back together by scientist. I love the bizzaro and wittyness of Madman filled with comical characters. Madman is original and conceptually post modern , delivering the readers a fresh unconventional ride. Speaking of post modern comic books, Flex Mentallo takes it up a notch with a parody of Charles Atlas "The Insult that made a Man out of Mac" advertisements seen in American comics from the past. This comic is for advanced comic book readers, which means it's apart of a bigger picture. If your a fan of the writings by Grant Morrison you get a feeling of "Magik" and the theories it beholds in Flex Mentallo. This is a good read for true comic book fans that touches on themes that connect to our inner youth. Last but not least THE DAMNED. I came across this noir/horror comic back in 2007 and I was captivated by it's visual art style and well scripted writing. I love the references to Dante's Alighieri's Divine Comedy, the Coen Brothers Millers Crossing and the masterpiece The Godfather. This comic influenced me so much I'm adapting it into a short film.
Well that's my favorite comic indie titles, and I hope other comic book lovers get the opportunity to pick them up at their local comic book shop.
